3 Simple Ways to Prevent Serious Water Damage to your Property

A small leak is often ignored by homeowners, not realizing that it is a big problem.  A glass of water spilled on your floor can be compared to a small leak in your plumbing system.  They both can result in a big issue if left unattended.  Even the smallest amount of water can lead to substantial damage and costly repairs. Therefore, just like spilled water should be wiped up immediately, a small leak should be repaired by a professional plumber as soon as possible.  Regular check-ups are necessary to ensure that your plumbing system is functioning properly.

Below are some tips from Water Savers Atlanta and Above All Cleaning & Restoration on how to detect and avoid significant water damage in your home.

  • Inspect kitchen sink plumbing.

The kitchen is an area with plumbing fixtures. The main sink and drain gets a lot of use.  The first thing to do is to remove everything from underneath the sink. Once it is clear, check the pipes to see if there are any signs of a leak or standing water.  You can grab the pipes from end to end to feel for any moisture. It is also recommended to regularly clean your kitchen drain to remove any normal residue in the pipe and maintain normal water flow.

  • Check the hose behind the washing machine.

Looking at the plumbing inside your laundry room is also recommended.  A bulging hose behind your washing machine is a disaster waiting to happen. The hose could burst at any second and cause major damage.

Regularly check the washing machine hose to make sure there aren’t any leaks, bulges, and that it is properly secured to water connection.

  • Check the area around the water heater.

Check the water heater and the area around it for leaks, a rusty tank, or standing water. Varying water temperatures are also a possible sign that your water heater is on it’s last leg.  It is also a good idea to flush out the water heater tank yearly and to have an annual inspection to make sure that it is working properly.
